Is it worth renting a dehumidifier?
We are often asked if it’s worth renting a dehumidifier, and we always try to give an honest answer. Sometimes it is worth renting. Sometimes it’s better buying one. Sometimes there’s not much point using one! It depends on your situation.
When to rent a dehumidifier
Reasons for renting a dehumidifier include the following.
Temporary flood / water damage / moisture problems:
If you have a burst pipe, a leaking pipe or are suffering from a flood after heavy rain, temporary hire of dehumidifier equipment can help dry your property as quickly as possible whilst not having to incur the full cost of ownership.
High-power building drying:
In the event of flood or water damage from a leak, domestic dehumidifiers are most often insufficient strength, and industrial dehumidifier hire would be required. Larger spaces such as double bedrooms or living rooms are best dried with industrial equipment. In this instance, rental of dehumidifiers and drying equipment gives access to professional grade equipment without the large cost of buying. High-capacity dehumidifiers may also be required for drying commercial properties such as offices and shops.
Short term needs:
If you only need equipment for a matter of days or weeks, for example with drying water damage as described above, rental is likely to be cheaper and more hassle-free over the short term.
Construction drying:
Speeding up drying of wet materials such as plaster, screed and other wet trades, or general humidity control, is often best achieved with renting a dehumidifier and drying equipment. This is often the case in colder months when natural drying takes longer.
Advice / damp testing:
At Dehumidifier Rental we install equipment in the optimum way for a drying jobs. Also assessments can be undertaken as to what preparation work may be required before drying work, and how long it may take to dry a property.
Try before you buy:
Often it is useful to hire a dehumidifier to assess its use before investing in a purchase.
When not to rent a dehumidifier
There are some scenarios when it might be better to purchase a dehumidifier. Reasons when renting a dehumidifier may not be best could be the following.
Very long term use:
For long-standing issues such as damp basements or an un-repaired building fabric, it may be more cost effective to buy one, to manage the issue over a longer term.
Humidity control:
We have written before about condensation dampness being caused by humidity settling on cool surfaces. Often the best remedy for this situation would be to improve insulation and heating setup, together with more natural ventilation. Measures such as this would mitigate the need for running a dehumidifier.
Minor dampness:
If water damage is only minor then it’s possible that simply natural ventilation it will dry out. This would particularly be so at hotter times of the year. Damp testing can help ascertain the extend of dampness and affect the decision as to whether natural drying would be sufficient, or if accelerated drying with drying equipment is required.
