Why Is My House So Humid? Common Causes and Quick Fixes

1st Oct 2025 | |

If your home often feels clammy, stuffy, or damp, you’re not alone. High humidity is a common problem in UK homes, especially during colder months when windows tend to stay closed for longer periods, and ventilation is poor.

Humidity can lead to condensation and then possibly mould, which can have adverse health impacts as we’ve mentioned in previous blogs. Also for Landlords there are legal implications of condensation and mould which should be considered, particularly with Awaab’s law taking effect this month.

What Causes Excess Humidity Indoors?

  1. Everyday activities – Cooking, showering, and drying clothes indoors can release litres of water vapour into the air as part of this daily activity.
  2. Poor ventilation – Without enough turnover of airflow, between outside and inside the property, moisture becomes trapped inside.
  3. Leaky pipes or roofs – Even small leaks can raise humidity and cause hidden damp patches.
  4. Cold surfaces – Whilst a cold surface doesn’t cause humidity in itself, when warm moist air hits a cold wall or window, condensation forms. This condensation can then add to the ongoing humidity problem.

How to Fix High Humidity

  • Increase ventilation by opening trickle vents and using extractor fans.
  • Avoid drying laundry indoors. Solutions to this could be either to use a tumble drier, or to deploy a dehumidifier near to the source of moisture (hanging clothes).
  • Check for leaks around windows, radiators, or pipework.
  • Hire a dehumidifier to quickly extract excess moisture and restore healthy indoor air levels. Over the colder seasons, an industrial dehumidifier may be required in order to remove humidity fast.

Ideal Humidity Level

Aim for 40–60% relative humidity. Above 60% encourages mould and dust mites; below 40% can cause dryness and irritation.
